Dwarf Moray Eel
When most people hear the word eel, they think of some monstrous creature
that spans over ten feet in length and weighs a hundred pounds.
Fortunately, the description above doesn’t even begin to apply to most
eels. One of the eels which contradicts almost all the assumptions made in
the above description is the dwarf moray eel. The dwarf moray eel is one
of the smaller eels in the moray species. At its maximum height, it spans
a very miniature twelve inches.
This obviously makes it quite lucrative to those in the market for a pet
eel. Further on the list of positives for the dwarf eel is its
non-aggressive nature. Dwarf moray eels are known to act up only in rare
occasions. They are so friendly that many don’t think twice about placing
them in an aquarium with smaller fish. Dwarf morays, like many eels of the
moray family, can be found in the Indo Pacific ocean. They reside in coral
reefs and in small crevices that provide them with ample darkness and
seclusion. Although dwarf morays are carnivores, many have managed to
modify their diets.
This is yet another reason for their very popular demand.
Unfortunately, dwarf morays can be quite difficult to spot. Their
miniature size combined with their practice of exposing only the upper
portions of their body make them very difficult to see, let alone catch.
As such, those who are able to catch them tend to sell them for large
amounts of money – often in excess of a thousand dollars.
