How Moray Eels Hunt

I am always excited to learn about different species and their hunting techniques. I am amazed at how animals hunt and am just in awe when I watch footage of life in the wild or deep in the ocean. Moray eels are the most beautiful eels, according to me. They live on the bottom of the sea bed and like to remain hidden in holes or beneath rocks. They usually sneak up on their prey when they trap them in the crevices of the rock. According to one of the recent reports on Moray eels and their hunting techniques, it was noted that these eels do not hunt alone.

They believe in co-operated hunting. Even the animal world is big on friends! The eels team up with groupers and hunt together for food. Shocking isn’t it? But nevertheless it is true. According to a tape produced on this research subject, the groupers visit the moray eels and wake them up to go and hunt. They signal to the moray eels by shaking their heads near the eels head. Once the eel is up, together they hunt their prey. They form an odd team considering that they both individually use very different tactics to catch prey.

But they are a very effective team especially since individually they are not very successful. Groupers catch their prey in the open water and their prey usually gets away by getting into crevices of the rock on the other hand eels trap their prey in holes but they get away into open water but as a team both groupers and eels are able to trap their preys well. It was also noted that regardless of which partner was successful, there was no aggression. In fact teamed together they managed to catch five times more of their prey than they normally do individually.
