Largest Moray Eel

Moray eels come in many shapes and sizes. There is one eel, though, that dwarfs all other moray eels. The name of this eel is the Strophidon sathlete, or what is known by more common names as the gangetic moray or the slender giant moray. The slender giant moray is found in the Indo-west pacific ocean. It likes living in muddy environments in areas like inner bays and rivers. Some slender giant eels have been measured at over 400 cm long.

They are recognized by their super long body and a brownish grey dorsal fin. An interesting fact about slender giant eel is that they can stand straight up and drift with the tide. There are very few other eels that can do this. Slender giant morays eat a wide variety of crustaceans and fish. Like most other eels, ot much is known about their eating patterns. They can go for very long periods of time without eating anything. Sometimes, they will eat a lot within a short period of time, then eat nothing for a few weeks, then repeat the process.

They do this because they may not be able to find a constant source of food where they are living. Also, one of the most mysterious things about the slender giant eel is its reproductive habits. Almost nothing is known about it’s reproductive habits. Since slender giant moray eels are so large, it is usually not a good idea to put on in your home aquarium. You would need an enormous tank to keep them happy, and that is not practical for aquarium enthusiasts. If you like culinary adventures, you can go to India or the Philippines, were this specie of eel is consumed by humans. You may even be able to find slender giant moray eel in some dishes at your local Indian or Pilipino restaurants
