Moray Eel Attacks

Just like any other water creature, Moray eels may attack humans if provoked. There have been relatively few Moray eel attacks that have been recorded. Whenever you hear about a moray eel attack, the situation is usually the same. When people go diving around the Cayman Islands or any other place that has Moray eels, the main way they attract them is to get some food and try and feed them. Now this is a really bad idea. Any time you're in the water with any kind of predatory animal, it is not a good idea to have any food on you.

What usually happens is that one of the divers reaches out with their hand and try’s to feed the eel. The moray eel will then jump out, and attack the food, but also catch a piece of the human’s hand. Some eels are poisonous, but most eels have very large teeth and will cause significant pain if one bites you. It is usually a very bad idea to provoke any underwater animal to come out when you're diving near them. They can move a lot faster than you can, and they are more scared of you than you are scared of them. It is best to just observe them, don't have food around you, and just be safe. You don't want to disturb them in their environment, and you don't want to provoke them to come and attack you.

The same thing can happen when eels are in captivity. When you have an eel in an aquarium, it is usually not the best idea to stick your hands inside the water when you're feeding them. They probably won't bite you, but it's never a good idea to take a chance. Just hold your hand above the water and drop the food into the tank. Don't try to agitate the water near the eel to let them know that there is food around. It will know and it will eat the food when it is ready. Use common sense when you are in the water around Moray eels Don't agitate them when they're in a home aquarium, and you will not get bit. Enjoy moray eels in a safe manner.
