Moray Eel Care
It’s very difficult to stress how important it is that you know how to properly
care for your moray eel. While moray eels are nowhere as easy to care for as a
goldfish, with the proper guidance just about anyone should be able to care for
one. The first thing that should be on the mind of any new moray eel owner is
the salt content of the aquarium water. The aquarium’s water should have
salinity levels up to par with the ocean. While morays aren’t very picky about
small shortages in salt content, they can become very ill when they are placed
in freshwater.
Although the effects won’t be immediately noticed, your moray will begin
to develop a slimy bacterial coat on its exterior. If the exposure to freshwater
persists for long enough, your eel is likely to perish. Your focus should now
shift to the cleanliness of your moray’s water. While many eel owners do operate
a filter in their eel’s aquarium, it is a good idea to completely empty the
water content inside the aquarium at one to two week intervals.
This will ensure that your eel is living in an optimal environment.
Unfortunately, many who follow the above guidelines still find their eels ill a
few weeks into owning them. It’s not until they look into their moray’s tank
mates that they begin to put the puzzle pieces together. As many of you might
already know, morays typically don’t know any better and end up eating some of
their tank mates. While this usually results in a little anger on behalf on the
owner, it can also bring about illness in the moray. So before you decide to
pair up your eel with one or more roommates, make sure that everyone will get
along with one another.
