Since moray eels tend to be rather shy, this type of habitat allows them to isolate themselves from the oceanic community. Fortunately, costal reefs, small crevices, ship wrecks, and rocks are able to provide moray eels with everything they need in a habitat.
Water depth also plays an important role in the moray eel habitat. Moray eels tend to be more attracted to costal waters given their shallow depth. However, many moray eels are known to live in deeper waters in excess of one hundred feet deep. Moray
eels of larger sizes are known to populate deeper waters.
Finally, water temperature and water salinity are major factors in a moray
eel habitat. Moray eels are attracted to warmer waters. Thus, many can be
found in tropical oceans including the Indo-Pacific ocean. Some moray eels
also require waters of varying salinity levels. As such, it is not
uncommon to find some in brackish and even fresh water. It is important to
note that all moray eels cannot survive in fresh water for a prolonged
period of time.
