Moray Eel Scientific Names

You may have gone to your local aquarium or zoo and checked out the aquarium section. You saw the fish, the sharks and the dolphins. But what really interested you was the Moray eels. You were so excited; you decided you wanted to buy an eel for your own aquarium. You asked someone at the aquarium what kind of eels those in the tank were. They replied “Moray eel” So you go to your local pet store, go to the aquarium section, and tell the salesperson “I want a Moray eel for my aquarium!” They look at you and say “Great, but there are many different kinds of Moray eels, you need to be more specific” You go home and log on to the Internet. When you search for information for Moray eels, you are overwhelmed by all the different species of Moray eel.

First, you have the Cirrimaxilla Formosa. They have a long, muscular body. They may not be the best Moray Eel for your aquarium, though, as they are only found in Taiwan. The also grow to a meter and a half long, and you don’t have a tank that big. Next, there is the Enchelynassa Formosa. This species of eel is often called the Viper Eel. It is found in the Indo-Pacific oceans, and grows up to 250 cm long. There is also the Gymnomuraena zebra, or the Zebra Moray. It is also found in the Indo-Pacific Ocean and grows to about 150 cm long. It eats things like crabs and crustaceans. The Monopenchelys acuta, or the Redface moray, is found in the Atlantic Ocean, down near the Bahamas. It is slender, has a long snout and can grow up to 20 cm.

The Pseudechidna brummeri, or the white ribbon eel, is found in the indo-pacific ocean. It can grow to about 103 cm. It likes living in shallow lagoons, buried under sand or rubble. The Rhinomuraena quaesita, or the ribbon eel, can also be found in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. It has a very long and thin body. They can be black, or they can have a fluorescent like appearance. The can grow to about 100 cm and live for up to 20 years. There are many different species of eel that you can enjoy. Just make sure you pick the right eel for your aquarium and for your personality!
